Stir Whatcha’ Got!

Willis Williams has had Cerebral Palsy all his life. A Realtor from San Antonio Texas Willis won his company’s prestigious Realtor of the Year Award in 1991. When he walked up to accept his award with that familiar herky-jerk walk that identifies CP sufferers, he was uncomfortable to watch. His face was contorted, his hands were knurled inward, and he spoke with a heavy slur.

Below is his acceptance speech:

"My wife Betty and I love the fall. The trees are so pretty when they change color. We wanted to experience the fall weather so we drove out of town for about an hour, then stopped for coffee at a roadside diner. The diner was empty. Our waitress served us coffee, but we noticed there were only 3 packets of sugar on our table. I looked around and saw the other tables had no sugar packets. Betty takes two sugars in her coffee, so I poured the remaining packet into my cup and asked the waitress for another packet. She looked at me, shook her head apologetically and said, “Mister, we’re all out of sugar. Just stir whatcha’ got!"

Willis chuckled and looked up at his audience. "Sometimes we aren’t grateful for what we have. We want to feel sorry for ourselves. But you know, instead of complaining about what we don’t have, we should take what little we have and JUST STIR WHATCHA’ GOT! I have been doing that all my life, stirring what I got. Thank you very much for this beautiful plaque. It means everything in the world to me."

As Willis Williams ambled back to his seat, the entire room rose and gave him a thunderous ovation. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
